Built to do AI the way real businesses need it done.
SmartAgents was founded on a simple premise: most AI projects don't fail because the technology doesn't work. They fail because nobody leading the project had ever actually run a business. We're the answer to that.
Most AI projects fail. We know why.
If you're reading this, there's a good chance someone has pitched you AI in the last month. Maybe several someones. The promises sound great. The demos look impressive. And most of those projects, if you run them, will not produce a return.
That's not cynicism. It's the math. Gartner's research puts the share of AI projects that actually deliver ROI somewhere around 28%, which means most of them don't. And it isn't the technology's fault. The technology works. The problem is who's leading the project.
Most AI agencies today are run by people who are really good at technology and have never been responsible for a P&L. They lead with models, tools, frameworks, and integrations. They think the goal is the AI. The goal is not the AI. The goal is the business outcome AI is supposed to produce.
That gap between what AI people build and what business people actually need is why SmartAgents exists.
Thirty years of building, selling, and advising real businesses.
SmartAgents was founded by Tom Poole, a veteran tech operator with thirty years of hard-won perspective.
Tom has been around technology since 1995. He's built, grown, and sold venture-capital-backed technology companies: the kind with investors, boards, payroll pressure, and the kind of margin conversations that keep a CEO up at night. He's spent the last twenty years advising growing businesses through his firm MarketSense, which continues to serve its clients as a separate practice. He's a 40 Under 40 winner, and his career has put him in the trenches of sales, operations, marketing, data, and analytics.
That's the background that shaped SmartAgents. Tom didn't come to AI from a research lab. He came to it from two decades of watching technology promises land (and often miss) in real businesses. He knows where the leverage actually is. Just as importantly, he knows where it isn't.
When he looked at what most AI firms were selling, and who was selling it, he saw the same pattern he'd watched play out in every technology wave since the late '90s: impressive demos, vague outcomes, projects that died quietly. He decided growing businesses deserved a different option.
SmartAgents is that option.
Outcome first. Technology second. Always.
Three things separate SmartAgents from the AI agency you're probably being pitched by right now.
We start with your P&L, not your tech stack.
Every conversation begins with what's slowing your business down, not what models we're excited about. Technology is a tool we reach for only when it's the right tool. Sometimes it isn't. When it isn't, we tell you.
We only take work we can make succeed.
Every engagement opens with a paid AI Readiness Scorecard: a front-door diagnostic that tells us, and tells you, whether your business is actually set up to benefit from AI today. If it's not, we send you home with a roadmap, not an invoice.
We stay in it for the long haul.
AI is not a project. It's an operating layer that keeps evolving. Our clients stay with us on retainer or time-and-materials because the technology keeps getting better, and the automations we build on day one need to keep getting sharper.
Small moves compound into big margin.
We call it the 5·5·5 Combo, our framework for targeting measurable business impact across three levers at once.
A paid scorecard. A right-sized build. A long-term partnership.
Three phases. One team. The founder on the weekly call.
AI Readiness Scorecard
$7,500 to $30,000 based on your size and complexity. One-time paid diagnostic. We analyze your operation, your data, your tech stack, and your people. You get a prioritized list of the one to three automations that will produce the best return with the least risk, plus an honest read on whether your business is actually ready.
Build
If the Scorecard says go, we scope each automation with a fixed fee. Every build ships with a baseline, a target, and a weekly read. We don't send vibes. We send numbers.
Partner
After the build, we stay on retainer or time-and-materials. AI is changing every month. Your agents need tuning. Your team needs support. And the next automation is probably already on your list. We're there for the long haul.
No pitch. Just a conversation.
If any of this resonates, if you're tired of being pitched AI by people who've never closed a deal or shipped a product, bring us your two biggest friction points. We'll tell you whether we can help. And if we can't, we'll tell you that too.
The first call is thirty minutes. No slides.
